Imoto Lines MAYA container ship 井本商運 まや コンテナ船

Meet the 2nd Generation MAYA Container Ship. Cargo ships of the Imoto Lines fleet of vessels are frequently seen in the Kanmon Straits. When they pass by, it's like bumping into an old buddy while walking your dog. It is always a pleasure to see the interesting and well maintained Imoto Lines container ships, and to sometimes photograph or take video of them.

These photos were taken by Ship Freakazoid on a hot Japanese summer day July 28, 2024 as MAYA passed between Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu. An older second hand Olympus e-520 DSLR camera with Zuiko 150mm lens was used to capture Maya on digital "film" for your viewing pleasure and/or reference.

Here is some info on MAYA acquired from press releases and databases: This vessel was constructed as a replacement for the first-generation "Maya" (228TEU capacity / built in 2008), which capsized and sank in Tokuyama-Shimonoseki Port in July 2022. The new ship inherits the name and is designated as the second-generation "Maya." The new ship’s capacity (245TEU) exceeds that of the first-generation "Maya" (228TEU) and aims to improve cargo handling efficiency while reducing the labor load on crew members by operating solely on A-grade heavy oil. Additionally, the vessel is equipped with the engine monitoring system "HANASYS5," which enables operational support from shore, thereby reducing the risk of equipment failure. It also includes an onboard power supply system as part of the Kobe Port Carbon Neutral Port (CNP) formation plan. Key Specifications:

Length Overall: 96.81m Beam: 14.0m Gross Tonnage: 749 tons Deadweight: 1,726 tons Container Capacity: 245TEU Refrigerated Containers: 42 units

FATA MORGANA - Ship sailing in the sky near Kitakyushu Japan

Alright, so check this out!  FATA MORGANA is this wild optical illusion that happens when you're standing on land, looking out over the ocean, and you see a ship that looks like it's floating above the horizon. It's not magic, though—it’s science at work. Fata Morgana - Ship sailing in the sky as viewed from Kitakyushu  Here’s the lowdown. The air above the ocean is usually colder than the air higher up in the atmosphere. But sometimes, you get a temperature inversion where the air closer to the water is actually warmer than the air above it. This temperature difference makes light bend or "refract." So instead of light traveling in a straight line, it curves and can make things appear in places where they shouldn’t be. Kind of like when you’re staring into a glass of water and the spoon looks all weird. It’s the same principle. Fata Morgana - Cargo ship appears to be sailing in the sky Now, when you're on land looking out at the ocean, and you spot a ship tha...
