NYK FUTAGO container ship in Kanmon Straits at sunset

The Singapore flagged container ship NYK FUTAGO passed thru the Kanmon Straits of Japan on a lovely but hot (36C-97F) mid-September afternoon. The straits were calm.  The air was heavy. The sunset was lovely. NYK Futago was glorious.

This 267 meter long cargo ship was captured by Ship Freakazoid as it sailed through the Kanmon Strait between the Garden Paradise Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki at sunset on September 17, 2024.

As per usual, SF used his trusty secondhand Olympus E-520 DSLR camera equipped with a Zuiko 150mm lens to photograph this lovely vessel.  Settings in the above photo were:  f/11 , ISO 100 , 1/1600 sec.

NYK Futago passes by historic Ganryujima and phallic Kaikyo Yume Tower
NYK Futago passes by historic Ganryujima and phallic Kaikyo Yume Tower

Japanese cities are notorious for having hideous towers in lovely places. Kyoto has a disgusting tower called, well, Kyoto Tower, which is an absolute eyesore in what is supposed to be a charming traditional city. Kitakyushu emulated Kyoto and built the horrid Retro Hi-Mart, which sounds more like a Korean convenience store than a tower condo, right smack in the middle of the historical area known as Mojiko Retro. Not to be outdone, Shimonoseki decided to erect a penis shaped tower between Korea Town and the Karato Market for all to envy. Surprisingly, no ships have collided due to the distracting phallic symbol that is O-Vision Kaikyo Yume Tower. NYK Futago was able to safely navigate the treacherous Kanmon Strait despite this egregious steel erection.

FATA MORGANA - Ship sailing in the sky near Kitakyushu Japan

Alright, so check this out!  FATA MORGANA is this wild optical illusion that happens when you're standing on land, looking out over the ocean, and you see a ship that looks like it's floating above the horizon. It's not magic, though—it’s science at work. Fata Morgana - Ship sailing in the sky as viewed from Kitakyushu  Here’s the lowdown. The air above the ocean is usually colder than the air higher up in the atmosphere. But sometimes, you get a temperature inversion where the air closer to the water is actually warmer than the air above it. This temperature difference makes light bend or "refract." So instead of light traveling in a straight line, it curves and can make things appear in places where they shouldn’t be. Kind of like when you’re staring into a glass of water and the spoon looks all weird. It’s the same principle. Fata Morgana - Cargo ship appears to be sailing in the sky Now, when you're on land looking out at the ocean, and you spot a ship tha...
